يَحْلِفُونَ لَكُمْ لِتَرْضَوْا۟ عَنْهُمْ ۖ فَإِن تَرْضَوْا۟ عَنْهُمْ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يَرْضَىٰ عَنِ ٱلْقَوْمِ ٱلْفَـٰسِقِينَ 96
Translations
They swear to you so that you might be satisfied with them. But if you should be satisfied with them - indeed, Allāh is not satisfied with a defiantly disobedient people.
Transliteration
Yahlifuna lakum litardaw 'anhum fa-in tardaw 'anhum fa-inna Allaha la yarda 'ani al-qawmi al-fasiqin
Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah describes the hypocrites (munafiqun) swearing oaths to the believers to gain their approval and acceptance, yet Allah makes clear that even if the believers are satisfied with them, Allah's pleasure cannot be obtained by those who persist in transgression and disobedience. According to Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari, this verse emphasizes that the judgment of Allah supersedes human approval, and no amount of false oaths or clever deception can substitute for genuine faith and righteous conduct. The verse serves as a warning that hypocrisy and deception are futile before Allah's absolute knowledge and justice.

How [can there be a treaty] while, if they gain dominance over you, they do not observe concerning you any pact of kinship or covenant of protection? They satisfy you with their mouths, but their hearts refuse [compliance], and most of them are defiantly disobedient.
مَثَلُهُمْ كَمَثَلِ ٱلَّذِى ٱسْتَوْقَدَ نَارًا فَلَمَّآ أَضَآءَتْ مَا حَوْلَهُۥ ذَهَبَ ٱللَّهُ بِنُورِهِمْ وَتَرَكَهُمْ فِى ظُلُمَـٰتٍ لَّا يُبْصِرُونَ
Their example is that of one who kindled a fire, but when it illuminated what was around him, Allāh took away their light and left them in darkness [so] they could not see.
