Fatir · Ayah 31

Translations

And that which We have revealed to you, [O Muḥammad], of the Book is the truth, confirming what was before it. Indeed Allāh, of His servants, is Aware and Seeing.

Transliteration

Wa-alladhī awhaynā ilayka mina al-kitābi huwa al-haqqu muṣaddiqan limā bayna yadayhi. Inna Allāha bi-'ibādihi la-khabīrun baṣīr.

Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah affirms that the Qur'an revealed to Prophet Muhammad is the absolute truth (al-haqq) and confirms the scriptures that came before it (the Torah and Gospel). According to Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari, this declaration emphasizes the Qur'an's role as a criterion (furqān) for distinguishing truth from falsehood, while simultaneously validating the core messages of previous revelations. The ayah concludes by reminding believers that Allah is fully aware (khabīr) and sees (baṣīr) the deeds and intentions of His servants, implying accountability and divine knowledge.

Revelation Context

Surah Fatir, revealed in Mecca during the early-to-mid Meccan period, addresses the challenge of those who rejected the Qur'an's authenticity. This ayah specifically responds to the skepticism of the Meccan polytheists and People of the Book who questioned whether Muhammad's revelation was genuine, establishing the Qur'an's veracity and its continuity with previous divine messages.

Related Hadiths

The ayah connects thematically to the hadith in Sahih Muslim where the Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'This Qur'an is the rope of Allah, the clear light, and the healing mercy.' It also relates to the hadith in Sahih Bukhari regarding the Qur'an's role as a guide and distinguisher between lawful and unlawful.

Key Lesson

The Qur'an stands as the ultimate source of truth and guidance for humanity, confirming rather than contradicting the essential messages of earlier prophets. Believers should internalize that Allah's complete knowledge of their intentions and actions calls them to sincere faith and righteous conduct in all circumstances.

And who is more unjust than one who invents a lie about Allāh or says, "It has been inspired to me," while nothing has been inspired to him, and one who says, "I will reveal [something] like what Allāh revealed." And if you could but see when the wrongdoers are in the overwhelming pangs of death while the angels extend their hands, [saying], "Discharge your souls! Today you will be awarded the punishment of [extreme] humiliation for what you used to say against Allāh other than the truth and [that] you were, toward His verses, being arrogant."
