That is the recompense of the enemies of Allāh - the Fire. For them therein is the home of eternity as recompense for what they, of Our verses, were rejecting.

Transliteration

Dhaalika jazaa'u a'daa'illahi an-naru lahum feeha daru al-khuldi jazaa'an bima kanoo bi-ayatina yajhadoon

Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah declares that the Fire (Hell) is the recompense for those who are enemies of Allah—those who reject and deny His signs. Ibn Kathir explains that those who persistently reject Allah's ayat (signs, verses, proofs) deserve eternal punishment, as their denial constitutes enmity toward Allah Himself. Al-Qurtubi notes that the phrase 'enemies of Allah' refers to those who actively oppose His message and deny His clear proofs, emphasizing that their punishment is just recompense for their willful rejection.

Revelation Context

This ayah appears in the latter part of Surah Fussilat, a Meccan chapter that emphasizes the clarity of Quranic signs and the consequences of rejecting them. The surah presents arguments for Divine unity (tawhid) and warns against those who deny the Quran and the message of the Prophet. This particular ayah concludes a discussion about the fate of disbelievers on the Day of Judgment.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'The most hated person to Allah is the one who is most stubborn in disbelief' (Sahih Bukhari 3534). Additionally, 'Whoever dies while denying even one ayah of the Quran has rejected all of it' relates thematically to the emphasis on rejecting Allah's signs.

Key Lesson

For believers, it reinforces the importance of accepting Allah's signs with humility and recognizing that denying established truth is not merely intellectual disagreement but spiritual rebellion against the Divine.
