And those who disbelieved will [then] say, "Our Lord, show us those who misled us of the jinn and men [so] we may put them under our feet that they will be among the lowest."

Transliteration

Wa qāla alladhīna kafarū Rabbanā arināā alladhayni adallānā mina al-jinni wa-al-insī najʿalhum tāḥta aqdāminā liyakūnā mina al-asfaliīn

Tafsir (Explanation)

The disbelievers will cry out on the Day of Judgment, asking Allah to show them the jinns and humans who led them astray so they may trample them under their feet and debase them further. This ayah illustrates the desperation and blame-shifting of the disbelievers in the Hereafter, as they seek to punish those they claim misguided them, yet Ibn Kathir notes this serves as a reminder that each soul bears responsibility for its own choices, and external influences do not absolve one of accountability before Allah.

Revelation Context

This ayah appears in Surah Fussilat's description of scenes from the Day of Judgment. While no specific asbab al-nuzul is recorded for this particular verse, it forms part of the broader Meccan context addressing disbelievers' denial and their ultimate realization of truth in the Hereafter. The surah emphasizes divine clarity and the consequences of rejecting guidance.

Related Hadiths

The theme relates to Surah Al-Fatihah's supplication and Qur'anic warnings about following misleaders. A relevant hadith from Sahih Muslim describes how people will blame their leaders on Judgment Day, reflecting the blame-shifting mentioned here.

Key Lesson

This ayah reminds us that while we may be influenced by others, we remain individually accountable for our choices and beliefs before Allah; true wisdom lies in independently seeking truth and guidance rather than blindly following others, as no one can bear another's burden on the Day of Judgment.
