Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah refers to the benefits and uses of cattle and livestock (mentioned in the preceding context), which serve both practical purposes and fulfill the desires of the hearts of the believers. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Qurtubi emphasize that animals provide transportation, sustenance, and material benefits, while also being a sign of Allah's mercy and provision. The mention of ships (al-fulk) extends this concept to maritime transport, illustrating how Allah has placed means of conveyance at humanity's disposal for achieving their necessary needs and goals.

Revelation Context

This ayah is part of a broader Meccan passage (Surah Ghafir, verses 79-81) discussing Allah's signs and blessings in creation, particularly focusing on the livestock and animals He has created for human benefit. The context emphasizes divine provision and the obligation to recognize these blessings as evidence of Allah's existence and generosity.
