Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah describes the eternal reward of those who attain felicity (sa'adah) in Paradise, dwelling therein as long as the heavens and earth endure, except as Allah wills—a gift that will never be cut off or diminished. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Qurtubi interpret this as affirming the permanent nature of Paradise and its blessings, with the clause 'except as Allah wills' understood to emphasize Allah's absolute sovereignty rather than suggesting Paradise will actually end. The phrase 'gift ungrudging' (ʿata'an ghayra majdhudh) emphasizes the generosity and uninterrupted nature of Divine grace bestowed upon the righteous.
Revelation Context
This ayah appears in the Meccan surah of Hud, which addresses core Islamic beliefs in Allah's oneness and the certainty of the Hereafter. It comes within a passage contrasting the fates of the blessed and the wretched on the Day of Judgment, reinforcing the theme of ultimate accountability and the reality of Paradise and Hell as central to Quranic doctrine.
Related Hadiths
The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Paradise is such that no eye has seen it, no ear has heard of it, and it has not been imagined by any human heart' (Sahih Bukhari 3244). Additionally, the hadith: 'When the people of Paradise enter Paradise and the people of Hell enter Hell, death will be brought and slaughtered between them' (Sahih Muslim 2849) affirms the permanent nature of the afterlife states.
