Tafsir (Explanation)

Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) praises Allah for granting him sons—Ishmael and Isaac—in his old age, which was a remarkable blessing given his advanced years and his wife Sarah's barrenness. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir emphasize that this verse demonstrates Ibrahim's gratitude and recognition that all blessings come from Allah alone, while the concluding phrase 'Indeed, my Lord is the Hearer of supplication' affirms his faith that Allah answers the prayers of His servants, as evidenced by the fulfillment of his long-awaited supplication for children.

Revelation Context

This verse is part of Ibrahim's supplication and praise within Surah Ibrahim, which emphasizes the prophets' reliance upon Allah. The ayah reflects the broader Quranic narrative of Ibrahim's life and his unwavering faith despite trials. It comes after Allah's command to Ibrahim to call people to monotheism, serving as a reminder of Allah's fulfillment of His promises to the prophets.

Related Hadiths

The hadith in Sahih Bukhari (4:55:557) records that the Prophet Muhammad said Ibrahim will meet his father Azar on the Day of Judgment and will be saddened when Azar does not enter Paradise. Additionally, Surah Maryam (19:7-9) contains a parallel account where Zachariah receives similar glad tidings of a son in old age, demonstrating the recurring theme of Allah's power over natural limitations.

So never think that Allāh will fail in His promise to His messengers. Indeed, Allāh is Exalted in Might and Owner of Retribution.

14:22Ibrahim

And Satan will say when the matter has been concluded, "Indeed, Allāh had promised you the promise of truth. And I promised you, but I betrayed you. But I had no authority over you except that I invited you, and you responded to me. So do not blame me; but blame yourselves. I cannot be called to your aid, nor can you be called to my aid. Indeed, I deny your association of me [with Allāh] before. Indeed, for the wrongdoers is a painful punishment."

14:9Ibrahim

Has there not reached you the news of those before you - the people of Noah and ʿAad and Thamūd and those after them? No one knows them [i.e., their number] but Allāh. Their messengers brought them clear proofs, but they returned their hands to their mouths and said, "Indeed, we disbelieve in that with which you have been sent, and indeed we are, about that to which you invite us, in disquieting doubt."

14:4Ibrahim

And We did not send any messenger except [speaking] in the language of his people to state clearly for them, and Allāh sends astray [thereby] whom He wills and guides whom He wills. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.
