Tafsir (Explanation)
These are the Quranic initials (Huruf Muqatta'at) that begin Surah Luqman, whose meanings are known only to Allah according to the consensus of Islamic scholars. Classical scholars like Al-Tabari and Ibn Kathir note that while their precise significance remains part of Allah's hidden knowledge ('ilm al-ghayb), their presence affirms the miraculous nature of the Qur'an and serves as a call to attention for the reader. These letters connect the surah to the divine discourse and establish the authority of the message that follows.
Revelation Context
Surah Luqman is a Meccan surah revealed during a period when the Quraysh were resistant to the message of Islam. The opening with these mysterious letters immediately establishes the Qur'an's divine origin and captures the listener's attention before presenting the moral teachings of Luqman to his son that form the surah's central theme.
Related Hadiths
Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that regarding the Huruf Muqatta'at, 'Some of them are names of Allah.' (Tafsir Ibn Kathir). Additionally, 'Ata' ibn Yasar stated that the Qur'an contains secrets, and these letters are among them (Jalayn Tafsir).
