Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah affirms that everything in the heavens and the earth belongs to Allah alone, emphasizing His absolute ownership and sovereignty over all creation. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Qurtubi note that this declaration serves as a reminder of Allah's complete self-sufficiency (Ghina) and His worthiness of all praise (Hamid), establishing the foundation for understanding that all worldly possessions are ultimately Allah's trusts to humanity. The verse reinforces monotheistic belief by negating any claims of ownership or deity besides Allah.
Revelation Context
This ayah appears in Surah Luqman, a Meccan chapter primarily containing the moral advice of the wise man Luqman to his son. The verse contextually follows discussions of honoring parents and gratitude, serving to remind believers that true wealth and possession belong to Allah alone, thereby encouraging detachment from material pursuits and reliance upon the Divine.
Related Hadiths
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said: 'The best of you are those who are best to their families, and I am the best among you to my family' (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 3895), which complements Luqman's advice on family ethics. Additionally, 'Wealth and children are adornments of worldly life, but the everlasting good deeds are far better' (Quran 18:46) emphasizes the same theme of Allah's ownership transcending material wealth.
