Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah affirms that Prophet Dawud (David) has a high and honored station with Allah and will have an excellent return and reward in the Hereafter. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Qurtubi explain that 'zulfā' (closeness/proximity) refers to his elevated rank in Paradise and nearness to Allah's favor, while 'husn al-ma'āb' (goodness of return) signifies the excellence of his final abode. This verse emphasizes the spiritual rewards bestowed upon the righteous prophets who combine devotion with justice and wisdom in their leadership.

Revelation Context

This ayah appears in the Meccan surah Sad, which discusses various prophets and their stories. The context relates to Dawud's special status among the prophets—he was known for his devotion, his role as both a spiritual and temporal leader, and his remarkable recitation of the Quran (or Psalms in Islamic tradition). The surah emphasizes divine reward for those who persevere in faith and righteousness.
