Tafsir (Explanation)

Allah addresses Iblis (Satan) with His curse upon him until the Day of Judgment. This ayah represents Allah's final decree regarding Satan's punishment and estrangement from His mercy. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari emphasize that this curse is both immediate in this world and extends eternally into the Hereafter, reflecting the permanent nature of Satan's rebellion and his rejection of Allah's command to prostrate to Adam.

Revelation Context

This ayah appears within the narrative of Surah Sad, which recounts the story of Satan's disobedience when commanded to prostrate before Adam. After Satan's arrogant refusal and his request for respite until the Day of Judgment (which Allah granted in verse 38:81), Allah pronounces this curse upon him. The context illustrates the consequences of pride and disobedience against divine command.

Related Hadiths

The story is referenced in various ahadeeth about Satan's nature. Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah transmit that the Prophet (ﷺ) said seeking refuge from Satan is essential, connecting to Satan's cursed status. Additionally, Sahih Muslim contains traditions about the enmity between mankind and Satan, stemming from this Quranic narrative.

And if there was any Qur’ān [i.e., recitation] by which the mountains would be removed or the earth would be broken apart or the dead would be made to speak, [it would be this Qur’ān], but to Allāh belongs the affair entirely. Then have those who believed not accepted that had Allāh willed, He would have guided the people, all of them? And those who disbelieve do not cease to be struck, for what they have done, by calamity - or it will descend near their home - until there comes the promise of Allāh. Indeed, Allāh does not fail in [His] promise.
