Wa'mur ahlaka bi-as-salati was-tasbir 'alayha, la nas'aluka rizqan, nahnu narzuquk, wa-al-'aqibatu li-at-taqwa

Tafsir (Explanation)

Allah commands Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to establish prayer among his family members and to be patient and steadfast in this obligation, while reassuring him that Allah does not ask him to provide their sustenance—Allah alone provides for all. The verse concludes with the profound principle that ultimate success and good outcomes belong to those who are God-conscious and righteous (al-muttaqun). Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir emphasize that this ayah places responsibility on leaders and parents to guide their households toward righteousness, while Al-Qurtubi highlights how the promise of divine provision should motivate believers to focus on spiritual duties rather than worldly anxieties.

Revelation Context

This ayah appears in the middle section of Surah Ta-Ha, a Meccan surah revealed during the early period of Islamic revelation. The broader context addresses the spiritual responsibilities of the Prophet and believers. While no specific asbab al-nuzul (revelation occasion) is documented for this particular verse, it falls within the surah's emphasis on guidance, patience, and the relationship between worship and divine care—themes relevant to the early Muslim community facing hardship and persecution.

Related Hadiths

Sahih Muslim narrates that Abdullah ibn 'Amr reported the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, 'Each of you is a guardian and each of you is responsible for his charges.' This hadith reinforces the parental and leadership obligation mentioned in 20:132. Additionally, Jami' at-Tirmidhi records that the Prophet emphasized establishing prayer in one's family as a means of blessing and protection.

Key Lesson

This ayah teaches that parents and leaders must actively establish Islamic practices within their families while maintaining patience and consistency, trusting that Allah will provide material sustenance; the deeper wisdom is that focusing on spiritual development and God-consciousness is the true path to success in this life and the hereafter, rather than anxiety about worldly provisions.
