Transliteration

Tafsir (Explanation)

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) is commanded to declare to all humanity that his role is solely that of a clear warner, conveying the message of Allah without compulsion or guarantee of acceptance. According to Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari, this ayah emphasizes the Prophet's responsibility is limited to clear communication of the message; the acceptance or rejection rests with the people themselves. This reflects the principle established throughout the Quran that the Messenger's duty is only to convey (tablig), not to force belief.

Revelation Context

This ayah appears in Surah Al-Hajj, a Medinan surah, during a period when the Prophet faced rejection and opposition from various groups. The broader context of these verses addresses the reality that rejection of the message is not something that negates the Prophet's mission, and he should remain steadfast in his role as a warner regardless of people's response.

Related Hadiths

The principle reflected here aligns with Sahih Bukhari (4777) where the Prophet said, 'By Allah, if Allah guides one person through you, it is better for you than red camels.' This emphasizes the value of even singular conveyance of the message. Additionally, the Quran itself states in 88:21-22: 'So remind, [O Muhammad]; you are only a reminder. You are not over them a controller.'

Key Lesson

This ayah teaches that our responsibility in conveying truth is to communicate clearly and sincerely, while ultimately respecting others' freedom to accept or reject—we cannot force belief, and success is measured by faithful effort rather than guaranteed outcomes. For believers today, this principle extends to sharing knowledge and faith: focus on clear, honest communication while releasing attachment to results.

22:11Al-Hajj

And of the people is he who worships Allāh on an edge. If he is touched by good, he is reassured by it; but if he is struck by trial, he turns on his face [to unbelief]. He has lost [this] world and the Hereafter. That is what is the manifest loss.

22:38Al-Hajj

Indeed, Allāh defends those who have believed. Indeed, Allāh does not like everyone treacherous and ungrateful.

22:54Al-Hajj

And so those who were given knowledge may know that it is the truth from your Lord and [therefore] believe in it, and their hearts humbly submit to it. And indeed is Allāh the Guide of those who have believed to a straight path.

22:78Al-Hajj

And strive for Allāh with the striving due to Him. He has chosen you and has not placed upon you in the religion any difficulty. [It is] the religion of your father, Abraham. He [i.e., Allāh] named you "Muslims" before [in former scriptures] and in this [revelation] that the Messenger may be a witness over you and you may be witnesses over the people. So establish prayer and give zakāh and hold fast to Allāh. He is your protector; and excellent is the protector, and excellent is the helper.
