Transliteration
Qala fakhruj minha fa-innaka rajimun
Tafsir (Explanation)
Allah commanded Iblis to exit from His mercy and presence due to his disobedience and arrogance in refusing to prostrate to Adam. The word 'rajimun' (expelled/cursed) indicates that Iblis was cast out from Allah's mercy, having become deserving of punishment for his rebellion. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari emphasize this as the moment of Iblis's definitive expulsion from the rank of the righteous angels, marking the beginning of his enmity toward humanity.
Revelation Context
This ayah occurs within the broader narrative of Surah Al-Hijr (verses 28-44) which details the creation of Adam, Allah's command to the angels to prostrate before him, and Iblis's refusal. This context is presented to explain the origin of Satan's enmity toward mankind and to establish the theological foundation for understanding human-Satanic conflict throughout history.
Related Hadiths
The Hadith of the creation of Adam (Sahih Muslim 2841) where the Prophet ﷺ describes the angels being commanded to prostrate to Adam and Iblis's refusal. Also, Surah Al-Kahf 18:50 clarifies that Iblis was from the jinn, not the angels, which provides additional context to his expulsion.

Key Lesson
Arrogance and refusal to submit to Allah's commands, no matter how justified one feels, leads to destruction and separation from His mercy. This ayah reminds believers that true honor comes from humble obedience to Allah, not from pride in one's status or capabilities.

And We appointed for them companions who made attractive to them what was before them and what was behind them [of sin], and the word [i.e., decree] has come into effect upon them among nations which had passed on before them of jinn and men. Indeed, they [all] were losers.
Then, you are those [same ones who are] killing one another and evicting a party of your people from their homes, cooperating against them in sin and aggression. And if they come to you as captives, you ransom them, although their eviction was forbidden to you. So do you believe in part of the Scripture and disbelieve in part? Then what is the recompense for those who do that among you except disgrace in worldly life; and on the Day of Resurrection they will be sent back to the severest of punishment. And Allāh is not unaware of what you do.

[They will be asked], "What is [wrong] with you? Why do you not help each other?"
