Al-Ma'idah · Ayah 115

Translations

Allāh said, "Indeed, I will send it down to you, but whoever disbelieves afterwards from among you - then indeed will I punish him with a punishment by which I have not punished anyone among the worlds."

Transliteration

Qala Allahu inni munazziluhā alaikum famam yakfur baʿdu minkum fa-inni uʿadhdhihuhu ʿadhāban lā uʿadhdhihu aḥadan min al-ʿālamīn

Tafsir (Explanation)

Allah responds to the disciples' request for the Table Spread by confirming He will send it down, but warns of severe punishment for those who disbelieve after receiving this clear sign. Classical scholars like Al-Qurtubi and Ibn Kathir emphasize that this represents a conditional covenant—the miraculous provision is accompanied by accountability, as rejecting such manifest signs constitutes grave ingratitude and disbelief that warrants unique punishment even among the worlds.

Revelation Context

This ayah concludes the narrative of the disciples asking Prophet ʿIsa (Jesus) for a table spread from heaven as a sign of faith. It occurs within the broader Medinan surah's discussion of covenants and tests. The context emphasizes that divine miracles come with profound responsibility: those who witness them are bound by a sacred trust, and breaking this covenant through disbelief incurs exceptional punishment.

Related Hadiths

While no hadith directly quotes this verse, Sahih Muslim records hadiths about the severity of rejecting clear signs. Related is the general principle in Sahih Bukhari: 'The most severely punished on the Day of Judgment are those who rejected after clear proofs.'
