إِنَّ ٱلْمُتَّقِينَ فِى ظِلَـٰلٍ وَعُيُونٍ 41
Translations
Indeed, the righteous will be among shades and springs
Transliteration
Inna al-muttaqīna fī ẓilālinnin wa ʿuyūn
Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah describes one of the blessings awaiting the God-fearing (al-muttaqīn) in Paradise—they shall dwell in shades and springs. According to Ibn Kathir and Al-Qurtubi, the 'shades' refer to the cool, refreshing shelter provided by the trees of Paradise, while 'springs' (ʿuyūn) represent the rivers and fountains of Paradise. This verse emphasizes Allah's provision of comfort and ease for the righteous, contrasting sharply with the torment described for the disbelievers in the preceding verses.
Revelation Context
Surah Al-Mursalat is a Meccan surah focused on the themes of Judgment Day, divine punishment for disbelievers, and reward for the righteous. This ayah appears in the final section of the surah (77:41-48) which describes the ultimate rewards of the pious, serving as a powerful conclusion contrasting with the descriptions of hellfire earlier in the chapter.
Related Hadiths
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said in Sahih Bukhari: 'In Paradise there are things that no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no human heart has conceived.' This hadith complements the ayah by affirming the extraordinary nature of Paradise's blessings, including the shade and springs mentioned here.
