Translations

Insert your hand into the opening of your garment; it will come out white, without disease. And draw in your arm close to you [as prevention] from fear, for those are two proofs from your Lord to Pharaoh and his establishment. Indeed, they have been a people defiantly disobedient."

Isluk yadaka fee jayibika takhruj bayda min ghayri su'in wadmum ilayka janahaka mina ar-rahbi fa-dhanika burhanani min rabbika ila fir'awna wa-mala'ihi innahum kanu qawman fasiqin

Tafsir (Explanation)

Allah commands Prophet Musa to insert his hand into his garment (bosom/pocket), and it will emerge white and radiant without any disease or defect, and to draw his arm close to his body to overcome his fear—these two signs are proofs from his Lord to present to Pharaoh and his officials. According to Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari, these miraculous signs were designed to convince Pharaoh and his people of Musa's prophetic mission, yet they rejected them because they were a transgressing and disobedient people who had turned away from truth.

Revelation Context

This ayah occurs within the narrative of Musa's call to prophethood at the burning bush (Surah Al-Qasas 27-28). Allah provides Musa with concrete miracles as evidence to present before Pharaoh, addressing Musa's initial hesitation and fear about confronting the tyrannical ruler.

Related Hadiths

Sahih al-Bukhari reports that the Prophet Muhammad mentioned the signs given to Musa, emphasizing how miraculous signs serve as proof of prophethood. Related thematically to the hadith in Muslim where the Prophet discussed the staff (thumma converted into a serpent) and the white hand as signs of Musa's prophethood.

Themes

Divine miracles (ayat) as proof of prophethoodOvercoming fear through faith in AllahRejection of truth by the arrogant and disobedientDivine empowerment of the messenger

Key Lesson

This ayah teaches that Allah provides clear evidence and signs to those commissioned with His message, and that believers should trust in Allah's support rather than fear their opponents. Furthermore, the rejection of truth by the arrogant despite clear proofs demonstrates that miracles alone cannot compel belief—hearts must be receptive to guidance.
