Tafsir (Explanation)
This ayah encourages migration (hijrah) in the path of Allah, promising abundant provisions and spaciousness in the earth for those who leave their homes for Allah's sake. The second part establishes that even those who die during their migration receive their full reward from Allah, as their intention and departure constitute a sincere act of worship. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir note this was particularly relevant during the early Islamic period when believers migrated from Mecca to Medina, but the principle extends to any sacrifice made sincerely for Allah's religion.
Revelation Context
This ayah was revealed in Medina and addresses the struggles of early Muslims who abandoned their homes, families, and wealth to flee persecution and establish the Islamic community. It comes within the broader context of Surah An-Nisa's discussion of rights and responsibilities, providing spiritual encouragement to those facing hardship for their faith.
Related Hadiths
The Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'The best hijrah is when a person abandons what Allah has forbidden' (Sunan Ibn Majah). Additionally, the hadith in Sahih Bukhari relates that the Prophet encouraged migration, saying whoever migrates for Allah and His Messenger will find their reward with Allah.
