The Arabic root فرح (f-r-h) carries the core meaning of joy, gladness, and rejoicing, but in Quranic usage it often denotes an excessive, boastful, or worldly form of happiness that is spiritually problematic. The Quran frequently employs this root to describe the rejoicing of believers in Allah's mercy and blessings (which is praiseworthy), while also warning against the arrogant exultation of disbelievers who rejoice in material wealth or temporary victories without gratitude to God.
