Tafsir (Explanation)

Prophet Musa (Moses) declares his obligation to speak only the truth about Allah, having come to Pharaoh's people with clear evidence (the miracles and the Torah). He then requests that Pharaoh send the Children of Israel with him to freedom. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari note that this statement emphasizes Musa's integrity as a messenger and his unwavering commitment to divine truth, serving as a response to any accusation of falsehood from Pharaoh.

Revelation Context

This ayah is part of the narrative of Prophet Musa's confrontation with Pharaoh, occurring in the Meccan period when the Quran was recounting past prophetic stories to encourage Prophet Muhammad. It reflects Musa's direct appeal to Pharaoh, presenting his divine mission and the demand for the liberation of the Israelites from oppression.

Related Hadiths

The concept of truthfulness in prophethood is reinforced in the hadith: 'The most truthful person in speech among the Arabs was Sadiq (al-Siddiq, Abu Bakr)' (Sahih Bukhari 3895). Additionally, the hadith emphasizing that messengers speak only truth is found in Sunan Ibn Majah and other collections regarding the trustworthiness required of Allah's messengers.
