Translations

And give good tidings to those who believe and do righteous deeds that they will have gardens [in Paradise] beneath which rivers flow. Whenever they are provided with a provision of fruit therefrom, they will say, "This is what we were provided with before." And it is given to them in likeness. And they will have therein purified spouses, and they will abide therein eternally.

Tafsir (Explanation)

This verse provides glad tidings (bashara) to the believers who combine faith with righteous deeds, promising them gardens beneath which rivers flow as their reward. Ibn Kathir explains that the similarity of fruits mentioned reflects the perfection of Paradise—believers will recognize the blessings they receive, yet each fruit exceeds what they knew in the worldly life in taste, fragrance, and quality. The verse emphasizes eternal companionship with purified spouses and perpetual residence in Paradise, highlighting the comprehensive nature of divine reward for the faithful.

Revelation Context

This ayah appears early in Surah Al-Baqarah (the first Medinan surah) and follows the description of believers in the previous verses (2:3-4). It is part of the surah's foundational section contrasting the rewards of believers with the punishment of disbelievers, establishing the theological framework of the Qur'an regarding faith and works.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet ﷺ said: 'The smallest reward for the people of Paradise is an abode where there are 80,000 servants and 70,000 virgins, and over which is spread a cloth of musk' (Jami' at-Tirmidhi). Additionally, 'No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no human heart has conceived what Allah has prepared for those who love Him' (Sahih Bukhari and Muslim, referencing 1 Corinthians 2:9).
