Al-Hijr · Ayah 25

وَإِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ يَحْشُرُهُمْ ۚ إِنَّهُۥ حَكِيمٌ عَلِيمٌ 25

Translations

And indeed, your Lord will gather them; indeed, He is Wise and Knowing.

Transliteration

Wa-in rabbaka huwa yahshuruhum; innahoo hakimun aleem

Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah affirms that Allah alone will gather all of humanity on the Day of Judgment, emphasizing His absolute power and authority over creation. The attributes of Hakeem (The All-Wise) and Aleem (The All-Knowing) underscore that this gathering serves a divine purpose grounded in perfect wisdom and complete knowledge of all deeds and intentions. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir emphasize that the gathering (Hashr) refers specifically to the resurrection and assembly of all souls for the final reckoning, demonstrating that no one can escape divine justice.

Revelation Context

Surah Al-Hijr addresses the Meccan disbelievers' rejection of the Prophet Muhammad and denial of the Hereafter. This particular ayah follows the discussion of creation (Ayah 15:22-24) and serves as a reminder that the Creator who fashioned humanity will also resurrect them. The broader context emphasizes God's control over all affairs, from provision to judgment, refuting the polytheists' denials of resurrection.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: 'The Day of Judgment will not be established until the sun rises from the West. When it does, all people will believe, but by then belief will not benefit those who did not believe before.' (Sahih Bukhari 4635, related to 15:25's theme of ultimate gathering and judgment). Also relevant: 'Allah will gather all people on one level on the Day of Judgment' (Al-Tirmidhi, related to the universal nature of Hashr).

Key Lesson

Believers should recognize that no action escapes Allah's knowledge and that all will ultimately be held accountable before an All-Wise Judge, which should motivate conscious God-fearing conduct in this life. The certainty of resurrection serves as both a warning to wrongdoers and reassurance to the righteous that divine justice will ultimately prevail.
