Transliteration

Wa-inna jahannama la-maw'iduuhum ajma'een

Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah affirms that Hell (Jahannam) is certainly the appointed destination for all the disbelievers and those who reject the message of Allah. Classical scholars like Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari explain this in the context of those who deny the resurrection and the Hereafter, emphasizing that their ultimate fate is sealed unless they repent. The definite article 'al' (the) combined with the emphatic particle 'inna' stresses the certainty and inevitability of this divine promise.

Revelation Context

This ayah appears in the Meccan surah Al-Hijr, which addresses the polytheists of Mecca who rejected the Quran and mocked the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). The broader context discusses Satan's rebellion and his vow to lead humanity astray, making this ayah part of the warning given to those who heed Satan's call rather than Allah's guidance. The surah emphasizes the consequences of rejection and disbelief in the Day of Judgment.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said in Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim: 'The people of Hell who will go to Hell are those who die as disbelievers.' Additionally, in Tirmidhi, the Prophet warned about the certainty of punishment for those who persist in disbelief and polytheism.
