Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah describes the purity and sanctity of speech in Paradise, where the inhabitants will not hear any vain, frivolous, or sinful discourse. Classical scholars like Al-Tabari and Ibn Kathir emphasize that this reflects the elevated spiritual state of the blessed in Paradise, where all conversation is pure, meaningful, and free from the moral corruption that characterizes worldly speech. The negation of both laghw (idle talk) and taʾthīm (sinful words) indicates the complete absence of anything displeasing to Allah in that blessed realm.

Revelation Context

This ayah is part of Surah Al-Waqi'ah, a Meccan chapter that extensively describes the scenes of the Day of Judgment and the conditions of the people of Paradise and Hell. It appears within a passage (56:23-26) detailing the blessings and comforts granted to the inhabitants of Paradise, emphasizing the spiritual and moral perfection of that existence.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet (ﷺ) said: 'The best speech is that which is concise and truthful' (related to the virtue of good speech). Also relevant is the hadith in Sahih Bukhari where the Prophet emphasized that in Paradise, 'people will speak as they wish without any harm or regret.'
