ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَكَانُوا۟ يَتَّقُونَ 63

Translations

Those who believed and were fearing Allāh.

Transliteration

Al-ladhina amanu wa kanu yattaqun

Tafsir (Explanation)

This ayah describes those who believe in Allah and practice taqwa (God-consciousness and piety). According to Ibn Kathir and Al-Tabari, these are the servants of Allah who combine true faith with righteous action and constant awareness of Allah's presence. Al-Qurtubi emphasizes that iman (belief) without taqwa is incomplete, and taqwa without iman is impossible, thus these two qualities are inseparable marks of the truly faithful.

Revelation Context

This ayah appears in the context of Surah Yunus, which discusses the characteristics of believers and the consequences of faith versus disbelief. The verse comes after discussions of Allah's signs and serves to identify the qualities of those who truly benefit from divine guidance and will receive Allah's mercy and protection.

Related Hadiths

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, 'Taqwa is here,' pointing to his chest three times (Jami' at-Tirmidhi 2409). Also, 'The best of you are those who believe and have the best character' (Sunan Ibn Majah 4143), emphasizing the connection between faith and righteous conduct.
