Surah Al-Infitar, "The Cleaving" or "The Splitting Open," is the eighty-second chapter of the Quran, consisting of nineteen verses revealed in Mecca during the early period of Prophet Muhammad's mission. Like many Meccan surahs, it addresses the fundamental themes of the Day of Judgment, human accountability, and the inescapable reality of divine reckoning. The surah opens with a series of powerful cosmic images describing the cataclysmic events that will accompany the end of the world: the sky will be cleft asunder, the stars will scatter and fall, the oceans will burst forth and overflow, and the graves will be overturned, releasing those buried within them. These dramatic opening verses serve to convey the sheer magnitude of the upheaval that will mark the transition from this temporal world to the eternal realm of the Hereafter. The imagery is designed to shake listeners out of complacency and force them to confront the transient nature of the created order, which, no matter how vast and seemingly permanent, will ultimately be dismantled by the will of God. Following this vivid depiction of cosmic destruction, the surah shifts its focus to the human being and poses a deeply penetrating question to mankind: "O human being, what has deceived you concerning your Lord, the Most Generous?" This rhetorical question strikes at the heart of human heedlessness and ingratitude. God reminds humanity that He is the one who created them, fashioned them in due proportion, and gave them a balanced and harmonious form, assembling them in whatever shape He willed. Despite these extraordinary blessings of creation, human beings persist in denying the reality of divine judgment. The surah then affirms the existence of noble recording angels, known as the "Kiraman Katibin," who are appointed over every individual and who faithfully record all of a person's deeds, whether good or evil. This passage underscores the Islamic belief that nothing escapes God's knowledge and that every action, no matter how small or hidden, is meticulously documented and will be presented as evidence on the Day of Reckoning. The closing verses of the surah draw a stark contrast between the fate of the righteous and that of the wicked. The righteous, referred to as the "Abrar," will be in a state of bliss and delight in Paradise, while the sinful and disobedient, called the "Fujjar," will be cast into the blazing Hellfire, from which they will have no escape and which they will enter on the Day of Judgment never to depart.
