Description

The Arabic root ع-ر-ف ('ayn-ra-fa) fundamentally conveys the concept of recognition, knowing, and elevation or prominence. In the Quran, it encompasses both epistemological meaning (knowledge, recognition, what is known/acknowledged) and spatial/moral elevation (heights, what is elevated or recognized as good), which is why it yields both ma'ruf (the recognized good/kindness) and A'raf (the heights/elevated places). This semantic range reflects the Quranic worldview that true knowledge and moral goodness are intrinsically connected to elevation and recognition, whether referring to Mount Arafat as a place of standing before God, the recognized norms of righteousness, or the ability to know and distinguish truth.
