هَلْ أَتَىٰ عَلَى ٱلْإِنسَـٰنِ حِينٌ مِّنَ ٱلدَّهْرِ لَمْ يَكُن شَيْـًٔا مَّذْكُورًا 1

بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَـٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
Surah Al-Insan, also known as Surah Ad-Dahr (Time), is the 76th chapter of the Quran and consists of 31 verses. While it is predominantly classified as a Medinan surah, some scholars have debated whether portions of it may have been revealed in Makkah, owing to its deeply eschatological themes that are characteristic of early Makkan revelations. The surah opens with a profound rhetorical question that invites human beings to reflect on their origin: was there not a period of time when the human being was nothing worthy of mention? It then describes how God created humanity from a mixed drop of fluid, endowing them with hearing and sight, and guiding them to the path — leaving them the choice to be either grateful or ungrateful. This opening passage establishes the surah's central concern with human creation, moral agency, and the ultimate consequences of the choices people make in this worldly life. One of the most celebrated portions of the surah is its vivid and detailed depiction of the rewards awaiting the righteous in Paradise. The Quran describes how the virtuous — identified as those who fulfill their vows, feed the poor, the orphan, and the captive out of pure love for God, and seek no reward or gratitude from those they serve — will be admitted into gardens of eternal bliss. They will recline on couches, shielded from the sun's heat and bitter cold, shaded by trees whose fruits hang within easy reach. They will drink from cups filled with beverages mixed with camphor and ginger, served from a flowing spring called Salsabil, and attended by youthful servants as radiant as scattered pearls. They will be adorned with garments of green silk and brocade, and silver bracelets, and their Lord will give them a purifying drink. This extended and sensually rich portrayal of Paradise serves not merely as a promise of future reward but as an illustration of divine generosity and the ultimate fulfillment that comes from a life devoted to selfless worship and compassion. Many classical commentators, including Ibn Abbas and others, have linked these verses to a specific act of charity by Ali ibn Abi Talib, Fatimah, and their family, who reportedly gave away their food to a needy person, an orphan, and a captive on three consecutive nights while breaking their own fast, keeping nothing for themselves. Whether or not one accepts this particular occasion of revelation, the narrative powerfully embodies the surah's ethical ideal of selfless giving. The surah also carries significant spiritual lessons about patience, devotion, and submission to God's will. In its closing verses, it directly addresses the Prophet Muhammad, urging him to remain steadfast in prayer, to
إِنَّا خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ مِن نُّطْفَةٍ أَمْشَاجٍ نَّبْتَلِيهِ فَجَعَلْنَـٰهُ سَمِيعًۢا بَصِيرًا 2
Sahih International
Indeed, We created man from a sperm-drop mixture that We may try him; and We made him hearing and seeing.
إِنَّا هَدَيْنَـٰهُ ٱلسَّبِيلَ إِمَّا شَاكِرًا وَإِمَّا كَفُورًا 3
Sahih International
Indeed, We guided him to the way, be he grateful or be he ungrateful.
إِنَّآ أَعْتَدْنَا لِلْكَـٰفِرِينَ سَلَـٰسِلَا۟ وَأَغْلَـٰلًا وَسَعِيرًا 4
Sahih International
Indeed, We have prepared for the disbelievers chains and shackles and a blaze.
إِنَّ ٱلْأَبْرَارَ يَشْرَبُونَ مِن كَأْسٍ كَانَ مِزَاجُهَا كَافُورًا 5
Sahih International
Indeed, the righteous will drink from a cup [of wine] whose mixture is of Kāfūr,
عَيْنًا يَشْرَبُ بِهَا عِبَادُ ٱللَّهِ يُفَجِّرُونَهَا تَفْجِيرًا 6
Sahih International
A spring of which the [righteous] servants of Allāh will drink; they will make it gush forth in force [and abundance].
يُوفُونَ بِٱلنَّذْرِ وَيَخَافُونَ يَوْمًا كَانَ شَرُّهُۥ مُسْتَطِيرًا 7
Sahih International
They [are those who] fulfill [their] vows and fear a Day whose evil will be widespread.
وَيُطْعِمُونَ ٱلطَّعَامَ عَلَىٰ حُبِّهِۦ مِسْكِينًا وَيَتِيمًا وَأَسِيرًا 8
Sahih International
And they give food in spite of love for it to the needy, the orphan, and the captive,
إِنَّمَا نُطْعِمُكُمْ لِوَجْهِ ٱللَّهِ لَا نُرِيدُ مِنكُمْ جَزَآءً وَلَا شُكُورًا 9
Sahih International
[Saying], "We feed you only for the face [i.e., approval] of Allāh. We wish not from you reward or gratitude.
إِنَّا نَخَافُ مِن رَّبِّنَا يَوْمًا عَبُوسًا قَمْطَرِيرًا 10
Sahih International
Indeed, We fear from our Lord a Day austere and distressful."
فَوَقَىٰهُمُ ٱللَّهُ شَرَّ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلْيَوْمِ وَلَقَّىٰهُمْ نَضْرَةً وَسُرُورًا 11
Sahih International
So Allāh will protect them from the evil of that Day and give them radiance and happiness
وَجَزَىٰهُم بِمَا صَبَرُوا۟ جَنَّةً وَحَرِيرًا 12
Sahih International
And will reward them for what they patiently endured [with] a garden [in Paradise] and silk [garments].
مُّتَّكِـِٔينَ فِيهَا عَلَى ٱلْأَرَآئِكِ ۖ لَا يَرَوْنَ فِيهَا شَمْسًا وَلَا زَمْهَرِيرًا 13
Sahih International
[They will be] reclining therein on adorned couches. They will not see therein any [burning] sun or [freezing] cold.
وَدَانِيَةً عَلَيْهِمْ ظِلَـٰلُهَا وَذُلِّلَتْ قُطُوفُهَا تَذْلِيلًا 14
Sahih International
And near above them are its shades, and its [fruit] to be picked will be lowered in compliance.
وَيُطَافُ عَلَيْهِم بِـَٔانِيَةٍ مِّن فِضَّةٍ وَأَكْوَابٍ كَانَتْ قَوَارِيرَا۠ 15
Sahih International
And there will be circulated among them vessels of silver and cups having been [created] clear [as glass],
قَوَارِيرَا۟ مِن فِضَّةٍ قَدَّرُوهَا تَقْدِيرًا 16
Sahih International
Clear glasses [made] from silver of which they have determined the measure.
وَيُسْقَوْنَ فِيهَا كَأْسًا كَانَ مِزَاجُهَا زَنجَبِيلًا 17
Sahih International
And they will be given to drink a cup [of wine] whose mixture is of ginger
عَيْنًا فِيهَا تُسَمَّىٰ سَلْسَبِيلًا 18
Sahih International
[From] a fountain within it [i.e., Paradise] named Salsabeel.
۞ وَيَطُوفُ عَلَيْهِمْ وِلْدَٰنٌ مُّخَلَّدُونَ إِذَا رَأَيْتَهُمْ حَسِبْتَهُمْ لُؤْلُؤًا مَّنثُورًا 19
Sahih International
There will circulate among them young boys made eternal. When you see them, you would think them [as beautiful as] scattered pearls.
وَإِذَا رَأَيْتَ ثَمَّ رَأَيْتَ نَعِيمًا وَمُلْكًا كَبِيرًا 20
Sahih International
And when you look there [in Paradise], you will see pleasure and great dominion.
عَـٰلِيَهُمْ ثِيَابُ سُندُسٍ خُضْرٌ وَإِسْتَبْرَقٌ ۖ وَحُلُّوٓا۟ أَسَاوِرَ مِن فِضَّةٍ وَسَقَىٰهُمْ رَبُّهُمْ شَرَابًا طَهُورًا 21
Sahih International
Upon them [i.e., the inhabitants] will be green garments of fine silk and brocade. And they will be adorned with bracelets of silver, and their Lord will give them a purifying drink.
إِنَّ هَـٰذَا كَانَ لَكُمْ جَزَآءً وَكَانَ سَعْيُكُم مَّشْكُورًا 22
Sahih International
[And it will be said], "Indeed, this is for you a reward, and your effort has been appreciated."
إِنَّا نَحْنُ نَزَّلْنَا عَلَيْكَ ٱلْقُرْءَانَ تَنزِيلًا 23
Sahih International
Indeed, it is We who have sent down to you, [O Muḥammad], the Qur’ān progressively.
فَٱصْبِرْ لِحُكْمِ رَبِّكَ وَلَا تُطِعْ مِنْهُمْ ءَاثِمًا أَوْ كَفُورًا 24
Sahih International
So be patient for the decision of your Lord and do not obey from among them a sinner or ungrateful [disbeliever].
وَٱذْكُرِ ٱسْمَ رَبِّكَ بُكْرَةً وَأَصِيلًا 25
Sahih International
And mention the name of your Lord [in prayer] morning and evening
وَمِنَ ٱلَّيْلِ فَٱسْجُدْ لَهُۥ وَسَبِّحْهُ لَيْلًا طَوِيلًا 26
Sahih International
And during the night prostrate to Him and exalt [i.e., praise] Him a long [part of the] night.
إِنَّ هَـٰٓؤُلَآءِ يُحِبُّونَ ٱلْعَاجِلَةَ وَيَذَرُونَ وَرَآءَهُمْ يَوْمًا ثَقِيلًا 27
Sahih International
Indeed, these [disbelievers] love the immediate and leave behind them a grave Day.
نَّحْنُ خَلَقْنَـٰهُمْ وَشَدَدْنَآ أَسْرَهُمْ ۖ وَإِذَا شِئْنَا بَدَّلْنَآ أَمْثَـٰلَهُمْ تَبْدِيلًا 28
Sahih International
We have created them and strengthened their forms, and when We will, We can change their likenesses with [complete] alteration.
إِنَّ هَـٰذِهِۦ تَذْكِرَةٌ ۖ فَمَن شَآءَ ٱتَّخَذَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِۦ سَبِيلًا 29
Sahih International
Indeed, this is a reminder, so he who wills may take to his Lord a way.
وَمَا تَشَآءُونَ إِلَّآ أَن يَشَآءَ ٱللَّهُ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ كَانَ عَلِيمًا حَكِيمًا 30
Sahih International
And you do not will except that Allāh wills. Indeed, Allāh is ever Knowing and Wise.
يُدْخِلُ مَن يَشَآءُ فِى رَحْمَتِهِۦ ۚ وَٱلظَّـٰلِمِينَ أَعَدَّ لَهُمْ عَذَابًا أَلِيمًۢا 31
Sahih International
He admits whom He wills into His mercy; but the wrongdoers - He has prepared for them a painful punishment.
