Surah Nuh, the seventy-first chapter of the Quran, is a Meccan surah comprising twenty-eight verses that is devoted almost entirely to the story of Prophet Nuh (Noah) and his prolonged mission to call his people to the worship of the One God. Revealed during the Meccan period when Prophet Muhammad himself was facing intense rejection and hostility from the Quraysh, this surah served as both a consolation to the Prophet and a stern warning to those who persistently denied his message. The surah derives its name from its central and sole figure, Nuh, who is presented as one of the earliest and most patient of God's messengers. The historical parallel is unmistakable: just as Nuh was ridiculed, ignored, and opposed by his own community over an extraordinarily long period, so too was Muhammad facing the same patterns of denial, and the fate of Nuh's people stood as a powerful reminder of the consequences of rejecting divine guidance. The surah opens with Nuh recounting his tireless efforts to guide his people, explaining that God sent him to warn them before a painful punishment would come upon them. He describes how he called upon them night and day, publicly and privately, using every conceivable method of persuasion, yet his efforts only increased them in aversion and flight from the truth. In one of the surah's most memorable passages, Nuh urges his people to seek God's forgiveness, promising them that if they do so sincerely, God will send abundant rain from the sky, increase them in wealth and children, and provide for them gardens and rivers. This passage beautifully links spiritual devotion with worldly provision, illustrating that turning to God in repentance is not merely an otherworldly concern but has tangible blessings in this life as well. Nuh also draws their attention to the signs of God's creative power in the natural world, asking them to reflect on how God created the seven heavens in layers, placed the moon as a light and the sun as a lamp, and caused them to grow from the earth like plants — all arguments designed to awaken their innate sense of wonder and recognition of a Creator. Despite these earnest appeals, the surah reveals the depth of his people's stubbornness. Nuh laments that every time he invited them, they placed their fingers in their ears, covered themselves with their garments, and persisted in arrogant refusal. Their leaders actively discouraged the common people from listening, telling them never to abandon their idols — Wadd, Suwa, Yaghuth, Ya'uq, and Nasr — names that are historically significant as they represent actual deities worshipped in pre-Islamic Arabia, suggesting

Indeed, We sent Noah to his people, [saying], "Warn your people before there comes to them a painful punishment."

To worship Allāh, fear Him and obey me.

And Allāh has caused you to grow from the earth a [progressive] growth.
