d-n-w
Description
The Arabic root دنو (d-n-w) carries the core meaning of nearness, proximity, or being close in both spatial and temporal dimensions. In the Quran, this root generates two major semantic fields: words describing physical or metaphorical closeness (such as drawing near to Allah or the nearness of events), and terms referring to the lower, nearer, or worldly realm (al-dunya), which denotes this present life as opposed to the eternal hereafter. The worldly life is called "dunya" precisely because it is the nearest, lowest, or more immediately accessible existence compared to the higher spiritual realm and afterlife, making this root central to the Quran's distinction between temporal earthly concerns and ultimate eternal realities.
